Q & A

What are the functions of lubricant?

Lubricant is a substance contains mineral base oil and additives. Lubricant carries some functions such as prevents rusting, acts as cleaner since it carries away contaminants and debris, transfers heat, and applies as a seal for machine. These key functions can apparently lessen friction of components so that the machines will move smoother and be able to reach an ideal temperature level.

Why synthetic lubricant is superior to mineral?

  1. More stable at high temperature
  2. Better in controlling and avoiding carbon deposit formation on machine
  3. Providing easier and faster cold-starts
  4. Better in coating metal surface and reduce surface friction
  5. Resistance to oxidation so it offers the benefit to have longer life of the machine (engine). Therefore it is more economical and efficient
  6. Minimize friction, improving power output and keeping the machine cooling

Why lubricant must be changed regularly?

A lubricant contains combination of different additives that can efficiently upgrade the function of oil. Additive is also known as friction modifiers. It is a substance that chemically binds to metal surfaces to reduce surface friction. This special-reducing component helps maximizing fuel economy and power output. But in various conditions such as driving habits and the climate in which the vehicle is operated, engine can burn additives that would eventually degrade the function. At the end it will affect your machine performance. So, you must be well aware of your oil change interval. Lubricant can also be contaminated by deposits due to internal combustion engines.

Why do lubricants have short life span?

There are two causes why lubricants have short life span, first because you have chosen the wrong product, second is due to broken engine that leads to leakage. Expert says when choosing a type of lubricant, you must take some considerations including its design, operation, maintenance and testing so as to guarantee it could work well and last long.

When you mistakenly choose the lubricant, it can cost you the declining volume of oil in your engine. There are some criteria taken into your considerations when choosing the best lubricant that suits you :

  1. Viscosity (SAE SAE 20W50; 10W50 etc)
  2. Standardization fits with your type of vehicles (API; JASO, etc)
  3. Choose the one having transparent general information such as name of the company produce the product, address, location of factory, etc.)
  4. It has product registration number (registered lubricant number/NPT) from Oil and Gas Directorate General.

Broken engine is mostly caused by leak in lubricating system. If this leak is not immediately fixed it will damage engine components.
